Key Privacy Promise

StepMelon processes your step and health data on your devices. Apple device sync uses your personal iCloud account (Apple CloudKit), and Android device sync uses the local phone/watch data layer. We do not collect or store your step history, goals, streaks, or health data on our own servers.

HealthKit Data

StepMelon reads your daily step count from Apple HealthKit to display progress toward your goals.

  • We read step count data only — no heart rate, workouts, or other health metrics.
  • HealthKit data is never written to, exported, or transmitted off your device.
  • Access requires your explicit permission via the standard iOS/watchOS Health prompt.

Motion & Fitness Data

StepMelon uses Apple's CMPedometer framework on Apple Watch and Android/Wear OS step sensor APIs on Android devices to count your steps in real time.

  • Step count and timestamps are used to show live progress.
  • Activity data is processed on your watch or phone.
  • Step data is stored locally using on-device storage — never transmitted to StepMelon servers.

Photo Library (Add Only)

StepMelon requests Add Photos Only permission so you can save and share achievement badge images.

  • We can only add images to your Photo Library — we cannot read or access your existing photos.
  • Badge images are generated on-device and saved only when you choose to export or share.
  • This permission is optional; all core features work without it.

On-Device Processing

StepMelon's core fitness data processing happens on your watch and phone:

  • Step tracking: Counted and displayed locally.
  • Goal management: Your minimum, target, and stretch goals are stored locally.
  • Achievement tracking: Badges and streaks are calculated and stored on-device.
  • Historical data: Your daily step history is maintained locally.
  • Theme preferences: Customization settings are stored on-device.

StepMelon does not upload your step counts, goals, streaks, badge progress, or walking history to StepMelon servers. The iOS companion uses Apple CloudKit for cross-device sync (badges, settings) via your personal iCloud account.

Optional Growth Analytics

The Android phone app includes an optional Growth analytics setting. When enabled, StepMelon may send privacy-limited app interaction events through Firebase Analytics so we can understand whether premium screens, share cards, review prompts, and subscription flows are working.

  • This setting is off unless you turn it on in the Android app settings.
  • Events may include app session started, Health Connect permission requested, Health Connect permission result, Health Connect unavailable, step service started or blocked, paywall shown, paywall button tapped, purchase flow started, purchase completed, purchase failed, restore, and share initiated.
  • Event metadata may include product ID, billing period, offer tag, paywall reason, app version, Android SDK version, broad source surface, Health Connect availability status, permission status, required/granted permission counts, whether onboarding was previously seen, step service status, and a short failure reason such as permission denied or Health Connect unavailable.
  • We do not send your step counts, daily goals, streak length, location, name, email, contacts, or HealthKit/Health Connect records in these analytics events.
  • Recent local event history is retained on-device for up to 90 days. Firebase Analytics retention is governed by Firebase/Google settings for the app project.

The Apple app currently uses local-only paywall counters and App Store Connect's aggregate subscription reporting; it does not include a third-party analytics SDK.

Data Retention and Deletion

StepMelon is designed so your step data stays under your control. We do not operate a StepMelon account system, and we do not store your step history, goals, streaks, badges, health data, or payment information on StepMelon servers.

  • Step, goal, streak, badge, and health data: stored locally on your phone or watch and retained until you delete it from your device. On Android, delete it by opening Settings → Apps → StepMelon → Storage → Clear storage/Clear data, or by uninstalling StepMelon from your phone and Wear OS watch. On Apple devices, delete StepMelon from your Apple Watch or iPhone; Apple Health data can be managed or deleted in the Apple Health app.
  • iCloud sync data: if iCloud sync is enabled, synced StepMelon settings or badge data is stored in your personal iCloud account and retained according to your Apple iCloud settings. You can manage or delete app data in your iCloud storage settings. We cannot directly access your iCloud data.
  • Android growth analytics: recent local analytics event history is retained on-device for up to 90 days. Turn off Growth analytics to stop future analytics events, or clear app storage/uninstall the app to delete the local event history. Firebase Analytics retention is managed through Google/Firebase settings for the app project and excludes step counts, goals, streaks, location, name, email, contacts, and health records. Firebase automatic analytics collection is disabled unless Growth analytics is enabled in the app.
  • Subscriptions and payment records: retained by Apple or Google as needed to operate purchases, renewals, refunds, and tax/legal records. Manage subscription records through your App Store or Google Play account settings.
  • Support emails: if you contact us for support, we keep the message only as long as needed to respond and maintain reasonable business or legal records. You can request deletion by emailing support@stepmelon.app.

Because StepMelon does not maintain a user account or StepMelon server copy of your step data, deleting the app data from your device is the primary way to delete your app data. For privacy or deletion help, email support@stepmelon.app. We aim to respond within 7 business days.

iCloud Sync (CloudKit)

The optional iOS companion app uses Apple CloudKit for cross-device sync:

  • Badge progress and achievement data sync between your Apple Watch and iPhone.
  • Settings and preferences sync across your devices.
  • Data is stored in your personal iCloud account, managed by Apple.
  • We cannot access your iCloud data — it's encrypted and controlled by Apple.
  • Sync is optional and requires your iCloud account to be signed in.
  • No data is shared with us or any third party through this sync.

Data We Do NOT Access

  • × Your name, identity, or Apple ID
  • × Your location or GPS data
  • × Health data beyond step counts
  • × Your contacts, calendar, or microphone
  • × Your existing photos (Add Only access)
  • × Step counts, goals, streaks, or health history in optional growth analytics

Subscriptions & Billing

StepMelon Premium is offered as an auto-renewable subscription through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

  • Payment processing is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see or store your payment information.
  • Subscription status is verified locally on your device using Apple StoreKit or Google Play Billing.
  • No account creation required — your subscription is tied to your Apple ID or Google Play account, managed through your device settings.
  • To manage or cancel your subscription: iPhone → Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions → StepMelon.
  • On Android, manage or cancel your subscription in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → StepMelon.

Children's Privacy

StepMelon is suitable for all ages. Because we do not collect any personal information from anyone, the app complies with COPPA and similar regulations by design.

Security

Because we don't collect or store your health data on StepMelon servers:

  • No StepMelon server database contains your step history or health records
  • No risk of unauthorized access (data is on your device only)
  • Optional Android growth analytics excludes health data and direct identifiers
  • iCloud data is protected by Apple's encryption and security infrastructure
